@johncarlosbaez Before sticking with academia, I had two separate coding interviews in the math edtech industry. Both involved writing a script to convert $..$ to \(..\) and $$..$$ to \[..\]. It's still on my GitHub somewhere. I think Knuth did this to make us all learn regular expressions.
