      @mhartl The fun part is where (at least when publishing math research papers) some referees will object to a proof *because* it's written well, because if they understood the details easily enough, the result must be "trivial" and unworthy of publication.

    @mhartl This hasn't happened to me, but in grad school I once was disappointed that an attempt to simplify one of my earliest published proofs didn't pan out; my mentor told me that this was probably for the best, because a slicker proof might have made my result look less significant!
