When I first started using pointless grading, I marked ✔️/⭐️/❌, where ⭐️ means revise&resubmit and ❌ means try again. Students felt work was underappreciated so I split ❌ into 💭/❌, both meaning try again, and students were happier. Reminds me of nytimes.com/2012/08/19/opinion/sunday/why-waiting-in-line-is-torture.html

To elaborate, 💭 means "shows progress" and ❌ means "negligible progress", so I almost never use ❌. But both require reattempting a new exercise.
